Jefferson Trail at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh Gets A Facelift!

Our Drollinger Environmental Fellow Lisa Fimiani was a Planting Station Leader for Friends of Ballona Wetlands epic replanting day at the Jefferson Trail adjacent to the Ballona Freshwater Marsh.

The day starts at the Friends Table; Staff and Volunteers Organize
Ruth Lansford visited the site and new (Ken Dial) and old (Bob Shanman) Board Members helped out
Lisa got to pose with Traci Park and Karen Dial, which was a real treat (both are Sheroes!)
Carlos with EcoKai doing traffic control, and you gotta love Dani’s hat that says Make America Green Again  – which is exactly what we were doing!

For over four years the trail had been decimated by homeless activity and now that the area has been cleaned up and people are not allowed to park vehicles or pitch tents there anymore, the replanting efforts have begun.  Over 100 volunteers put in over 1,000 plants on Saturday, December 2nd!  Habitat rehabilitation along the trail will give the area a chance to rebound and ensure wildlife may continue to thrive.

Here’s another great article about the day’s events, as captured by Dr. David Kay

For background info on the whole process, check out the Friends’ Bulletin from early this year

The Ballona Freshwater Marsh Woodchip Walking Trail is open on Lincoln Boulevard, however, most of the trail along Jefferson Boulevard will remain closed while the plants have a chance to get established.  However efforts are underway to open the entire L-shaped Woodchip Trail up again, so stay tuned.

It was a great day for everyone involved in this project, and as the tag line says, “It truly does take a village!”
